Gas Safety Week 2021: Top tips for staying gas safe
In true British summertime style, one week its hotter than Spain and the next it feels like January again. But soon enough, we’ll be popping the heating on to warm our homes during the long winter.
There’s no better time than Gas Safety Week, to remind you how to keep yourself, your friends, family and neighbours safe.
Tip #1: Check your Carbon Monoxide detector
Carbon Monoxide is a very dangerous gas. It’s poisonous, but you can’t see it or smell it, and it can be produced by fuels such as gas, oil, wood and coal. The most common signs of poisoning include headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, sickness and collapsing. Having a Carbon Monoxide alarm is the most reliable way of checking there aren’t dangerous levels of this dangerous gas in your home.
Tip #2: Never try DIY with gas appliances – we'll service them for you
Maintaining your gas boiler is essential to preventing gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. It is important that your boiler is fitted, fixed and serviced every year. Never try DIY with gas appliances. We’ll schedule an annual gas safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer for you.
Tip #3: Look out for warning signs
Your gas appliances should be checked once a year (at least). You can spot some warning signs that they’re not working properly, such as a lazy yellow flames instead of clear blue ones. Tip #4: Use your appliances properly
Gas is serious – if it’s not used properly, it can pose a risk to you, your family, friends and neighbours. Make sure you keep vents and chimneys clear and only use your gas appliance for its intended purpose (not to heat a room for example).
